It's interesting, as some of the latest Clydesdale bank notes have been printed on what can only be described as a Euro template. Very spooky. Maybe Alex Salmon has something planned that we don't know about!!!!

As I'll be moving to Scotland soon, this is something I'll be taking a keener interest in from now on!

I think the only solution to this would be to have a set of standard design Pounds Sterling banknotes for the UK, issued by all the banks that issue banknotes in the UK. The recognition and trust problem would then be lessened.

The fact is that although Scottish banknotes are not legal tender in England (they're not even legal tender in Scotland - only coins are!) they are legal currency throughout the UK (if it says Pounds Sterling on it you should, in theory, be able to spend it anywhere). It is purely the decision of retailers (or, more usually, their employees) whether to accept them or not.

This is a facinating subject - for more debate and comment, take a look at http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=938509&highlight=scottish+currency

As someone who owned retail stores. scottish currency is a pain in the bum for three separate reasons.

(a) It is hard enough to get staff to recognise UK forged fivers - you wouldn believe how good they are.- so for that reason we only took them from regulars

(b) Customers hate recieveing them in change - so we were forced to bank them - which in itself is a nuisance - banking cash costs money.

(c) As a retailer I would refuse a £100 note - it plays hell with the float, and opening the safe is ALWAYS a risk.. Ask anyone who has had retail staff attacked

So my vote is keep it north of the border.

I love it that Marks & Spensers will let you pay in Euros in their Oxford Street branch, but not in Scottish Notes!
